Τhe Quiet Volume: Ant Hampton & Tim EtchellsInfo:
Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center presents, for the first time, the Greek version of The Quiet Volume, an “Autoteatro” performance by the British artists Ant Hampton and Tim Etchells. The term “Autoteatro” describes a series of small-scale performances – specially designed for specific spaces – that come to life with the participation of members of the audience. A combination of silence and concentration, The Quiet Volume exposes the strange magic at the heart of the reading experience, allowing aspects of it we think of as deeply internal to lean out into the surrounding space, and to leak from one reader's sphere into another's. Having been performed in 12 countries to date, The Quiet Volume creates a unique experience for library visitors/readers and explores the particular tension common to any library worldwide. In the Open Reading Area, at the second floor of the National Greek Library, two participants, seated at a table, have headphones on, with a red and a green notebook and a few volumes of books before them. As they hear whispered cues on their headphones, they silently read excerpts from the small stack of books. The Greek version of The Quiet Volume was especially produced by Ant Hampton to be performed at the SNFCC. Ant Hampton is a British artist and performance maker based in Germany. His performance works are diverse in content and tone, yet consistently explore the tension between fixed, formal or structural elements and the improvised ones that come about in the moment. For 20 years now, he has been developing new modes of performance, guiding people through unrehearsed performance situations. Other works such as Hello for Dummies, GuruGuru, Cue China, OK OK, This is Not My Voice Speaking and The Extra People, continue to tour widely, in over 60 different language versions. Tim Etchells is an artist and writer based in the UK, whose work shifts between performances, visual art creations and works of fiction. He is the leader of the world-renowned Sheffield-based performance group Forced Entertainment. Exhibiting and presenting work in significant institutions all over the world, he is currently Professor of Performance & Writing at Lancaster University. Etchells’ work has been shown recently at Tate Modern, Cubitt, Hayward Gallery and Bloomberg SPACE in London, at Turner Contemporary, The Grundy and Compton Verney in the UK, as well as at Witte de With, Rotterdam, and MUHKA (Antwerp). Lynda Benglis: In the Realm of the SensesExhibition LYNDA BENGLIS | IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES 21 November, 2019 to 15 March, 2020 Info: Devoted to Lynda Benglis’s highly original and prolific output in diverse media, this is the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in a country that has played a major role in her life and vision: Greece. Spanning half a century from 1969 onwards, the select survey of thirty-six sculptures – amounting to a concise retrospective – will occupy the intimate spaces of the Stathatos Mansion, displaying a wide spectrum of Benglis’s materials, imagery and ideas. The show also presents three key ancient artefacts generously lent by the Museum of Cycladic Art itself. In the Realm of the Senses celebrates a maverick artist who began as a female pioneer of Post-Minimalism in the late 1960s and still creates with exuberance in the twenty-first century. Describing Benglis’s first wax reliefs as early as 1968, the New York gallerist and critic Klaus Kertess noted that “skin, pull, sensuousness” ranked among her primary concerns. Such intense corporeal sensations extend to the present – as Benglis’s sculpture constantly shifts between fixity and movement, nature and flesh, with both grace and provocative boldness. Hellenic Parliament: significant moments in almost two hundred years of historyInfo: Few people in our country know that the Hellenic Parliament is one of the oldest parliaments in Europe; and when they find out, this fact does not seem strange to them. That is because, for most of us, the existence of this parliament is intrinsically linked to the political history of this country; its workings reflecting both the country’s glory as well as its darkest moments. LULUTheatre With his two explosive texts, Earth Spirit and Pandora‘s Box (subsequently famous under the common title Lulu), German playwright Frank Wedekind revolutionized the theatre of his age and liberated the dark instincts of the bourgeoisie, which had been trapped for centuries in the vastness of human subconscious. Wedekind was a risky tightrope walker, standing alone and far higher than any of his predecessors or contemporaries. To the hypocrisy of the ruling class he would devote one obituary after the other. His plays, branded as obscene and pornographic, could see the light of the stage only heavily censored. In an era where women were covered from head to toe, his female roles would strip naked and involve themselves in vibrantly erotic scenes, even with characters from the same sex. He showed unmasked violence, prostitution and drug use. He wrote in a new, candid language, with short scenes and sharp dialogues, in which each word crashed into the next one, sounding like a verbal exchange of heavy gunfire. Lulu herself enthralls audiences with her genuine vitality, her unbridled eroticism, her natural intelligence and her unsolvable mystery. She is the epitome of wild nature in all its beauty and horror. No one can own, control or subdue her, not even the cruelest of animal tamers. Her enigma lies in her ability to embody perfectly and with the uttermost innocence all images projected on her: child, virgin, wife, mistress, femme fatale, mother, lover, whore; the list is endless. She does not identify with the roles she is given by her male or female persecutors, but plays them and with them. She can be Nelli, Eva, Mignon, Katya, or any other fantastic or mythical creature, however, under all these masks she always remains Lulu. But who is Lulu, what is Lulu? She is Heaven and Hell, Eros and Thanatos, a force of nature, a figment of the imagination, all women and all notions of womanhood. But how can one even begin to conceive, let alone know, such a creature? All around her, a spectacular array of male and female figures, named by Wedekind himself “monsters”, perform all kinds of circus-, burlesque-, and melodramatic numbers, in their desperate attempt to solve the big riddle. Dante’s Purgatory is a fairy tale compared to this dangerous plunge into the unfathomable depths of sexuality, this chilling tragicomedy of human psychopathology, that reflects with dazzling accuracy and razor-sharp humor the darker side of human existence. 27 November, 2019 to 12 January, 2020 Info: The production, which opens at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation on November 6th 2019, boasts a formidable cast (mentioned in alphabetical order): Konstantinos Avarikiotis, Karyofyllia Karabeti, Andreas Konstantinou, Giorgos Biniaris, Alkistis Poulopoulou, Akis Sakellariou, Haris Frangoulis, and Nikos Hatzopoulos. Adapted and directed by the internationally acclaimed director Yannis Houvardas, sets by Eva Manidaki, costumes by Ioanna Tsami, music by Thodoris Economou, and lighting by Lefteris Pavlopoulos. Greek translation by Yorgos Depastas. Assistant to the Director Irini Fanarioti. Wed. 20:30 Duration: 130‘ (2 hours and ten minutes) – No interval Suitable for children aged 16 or over . Light Installations at the Stavros Niarchos ParkInfo:
Once again this Christmas, four new light installations by leading artists, are presented for the first time in Greece, turning the SNFCC’s Stavros Niarchos Park into a futuristic Christmas setting. Take a winter stroll in an electrified, dream-like atmosphere in the Mediterranean Garden, the Great Lawn, the Labyrinth; explore the interplay of light and sound, nature and beauty, science and art, engaging with the interactive installations. Walk through, hide inside, activate them, take a photo, take a selfie! Play and discover new dimensions of sound and light, which will dazzle young and old. The light installations will be in operation daily from 30/11/19 to 06/01/20, from 17.00 until the Stavros Niarchos Park’s closing time. (Until 20/12, Monday to Thursday, the Park will be closing at 10 pm, whereas Friday to Sunday, it will be closing at midnight. From 21/12 to 06/01, the Park will be open daily until midnight).
Large Pendulum Wave As part of the imposing Large Pendulum Wave, a series of 15 illuminated pendulums are suspended at a height of 12m. All of them are lifted up and then simultaneously released to fly freely, as visitors enjoy a fascinating dance show that oscillates between harmony and chaos, gravity being its only driving force! A spectacular combination of the poetry of math and the beauty of physics, this is the visual interpretation of a physical phenomenon demonstrating how nature translates a mathematical sequence into choreographic delight. Through his large-scale audiovisual installations, Ivo Schoofs (b. 1972) offers spectators an experience of the forces of natural movement through science and technology. He describes his work as “a celebration of movement in its most natural occurrence”. The installation was made possible with support from: Gemeente Eindhoven, Mondriaan Fonds, IBS Precision Engineering, Philips Valmont Structures, OMT Solutions, Moesasji, Leffe Goldstein. 30/11-06/01 | GREAT LAWN
Wave-Field Having travelled to many countries around the world, Wave-Field is coming to the Stavros Niarchos Park, inviting SNFCC’s visitors to play and get creative, while exploring different sonic dimensions of space. Acoustic, illuminated see-saws, each with its own music idiom and “idiosyncrasy”, await for you to play with them, in a sensory playground from the future. When set into motion, the see-saws erupt into an impromptu composition, each time evoking a unique soundscape. This project is the result of a collaboration between Lateral Office Architects, CS Design lighting and the Canadian composer and visual artist Mitchell Akiyama. Also contributed: Generique Design, Robocut, EGP Group, Wireframe and L4 Studio. 30/11-06/01 | PINE GROVE
Infinite Support A collective comprising four artists and close friends, LightForm have translated their ideas about friendship into a beautiful light oject in Infinite Support. The installation consists of two large luminous drop-shaped ‘nests’ that help each other stay upright. The audience can hide within or interact with the multiple mirrors, exploring an unusual sensation of depth. These mirrors symbolize real friendship: a bond that, according to LightForm, knows no limits. LightForm are Daniel Thomassen, Raoul van der Ploeg, Dorus van Lieshout and Ivar Posthumus. 30/11-06/01 | MEDITERRANEAN GARDEN
The Pool Jen Lewin is a New-York-based light sculptor whose installations share with audiences sensational images of rare natural beauty that have touched the artist. In The Pool she has been inspired by the thousands of luminous ponds of light left behind by the ebb on a moonlit Australian beach. Lewin conjures this magical memory in an environment of giant, concentric circles created from dozens of interactive circular pads where play and collaborative movement create mesmerizing patterns of shifting and fading colors. Since premiering at the legendary Burning Man Festival in Nevada in 2008, The Pool has traveled to over 40 major cities and light festivals in the U.S.A., Europe and Asia. 30/11-06/01 | LABYRINTH

A co-production of the Royal Opera House, London, the New York Metropolitan Opera and the Norwegian National Opera (Oslo). It is a grandiose opera full of impressive arias, duets and compelling ensembles, but at the same time also a work with deeply human characters, who struggle to achieve a balance between their feelings and duty. Its multi-level political dimension, with the conflict between secular power and church, and, at the same time, between liberalism and absolutism, was of particular interest to Verdi, especially at a time when the modern Italian state was being formed. The performance will be conducted by the celebrated conductor and artist in residence at the GNO for the 2019/20 season Philippe Auguin, starring an internationally acclaimed cast of renowned soloists. THESEUS AND MINOTAURTheatre After “the Expedition of the Argonauts”, Karmen Rouggeri and Christina Kouloumpi direct the myth of Theseus and Minotaur at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation for the 2019-2020 season. Children and adults will follow the route of the well-loved hero of our mythology, in a subtle and detailed performance. About the play: The crown Prince of Athens, Theseus, after finding out that he is the son of Aegeus, the king of Athens, takes the sandals and the sword that his father had left for him under a big rock and starts his journey from Troizina to Athens in order to meet him. Despite the advice of his mother to travel by boat, he opted to go on land. He wanted to follow a more difficult and arduous path, in order to get rid of the criminals and the muggers that overran the area, having as a role model Hercules and his labours. Our play is divided into two parts. In the first part, which includes the route of Theseus from Troizina to Athens, it was decided to have an Aristophanic approach on the direction and the stage design, in order to avoid the difficult scenes for the young audience. The second part comprises of: 1. The journey of Theseus to Crete that will be presented with an impressive scenic design, by creating a sea world on stage. 2. The palace of Minos and the prominent labyrinth, where Theseus will take the clew from Princess Ariadne in order to reach Minotaur and succeed in his greatest labour. The play will be accompanied by Cretan lyra, mantinades(Cretan lyrical poems), dance and traditional Cretan songs. 11 December, 2019 to 5 April, 2020 Info: Michael Cacoyannis Foundation : 206, Piraeus Str. Revolution: Demons / The Great Sinners - Fyodor DostoyevskyTheater Direction: Constatinos Hatzis Premiere: Friday 13 December Raskolnikov, Stavrogin, Smerdyakov and Ivan Karamazov confront their sins, come face to face with their own truth, destroy themselves and reach the depths of their existence. Against them Porfíriy, Tikhon and Devil. These great sinners derived from the masterpieces of the great Russian author, meet at this new performance, the one after the other their truth or more precisely their punishment. Constantinos Hatzis continues his study on the work of the great novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky. Just after the end of the performances of Demons/The Grand Inquisitor and four years after the great success of The Great Sinners (2015 at MCF), the young director indulges again in the principal characters of Fyodor Dostoevsky. “We pass from the “Demons” , a novel that announces in a predictive way the revolution that pursued in Russia, to the inner “revolution” of the great sinners. This journey reveals the true human nature. The man stripped down to the bone in front of his own self. The performance has a great cast of talented actors: Giorgos Papapavlou, Theoharis Ioannidis, Nikos Manesis, Constantinos Hatzis and Giannis Hortis. During the performance is played a song “The Dream” especially composed for the play by Nikos Xydakis and based upon the poetry of Georgios Vizyinos. The heroes that we met at Demons coexist with the heroes of The Great Sinners, in a new approach. The Great Sinners is an original readaptation- composition of Giannis Haritodiplomenos and Constantinos Hatzis. It consists of passages of the top works of Dostoevsky “Crime and Punishment”, “Demons”, “The Brothers Karamazov”. The precise, sarcastic and demonic humor of Dostoyevsky provides what is needed for this great confrontation through a game of relationships and self-consciousness and primarily though the “humorous” situation of human existence. Where does it lead this relentless journey? In finding God or in finding faith? 13 December, 2019 to 9 February, 2020 Info: Cast and Crew Adaptation-Rendering-Text editing: Constantinos Hatzis, Giannis Haritodiplomenos Direction – Set Installation: Constantinos Hatzis Original Music Composition: Nikos Xydakis Costumes: Miranda Dempsey Movement: Angelos Papadopoulos Production Management: Kostantina Aggeletou Assistant Director: Marilia Mitrousi Actors (in alphabetical order): Stavrogin, Devil : Theoharis Ioannidis Porfíriy, Tikhon: Constantinos Hatzis Satov, Smerdyakov: Giannis Hortis Kyrillov: Nikos Manesis Raskolnikov, Ivan Karamazov: Giorgos Papapavlou During the performance Constantinos Hatzis plays live on piano parts of the works Toccata in d minor (Prokofiev) and Totentanz (List). STUDIOS 2019 / Territorial displacementsexhibition STUDIOS 2019 The new artistic directory of T.A.F. / the art foundation hosts the yearly exhibition STUDIOS, first presented in 2011.The exhibition series showcases the works of selected graduates from the Athens School of Fine Arts. This year's title of the exhibition "Territorial displacements" is inspired by the French philosopher’s Gaston Bachelard idea of phenomenology. The works of the exhibition attempt to change our perception of the image and view itself through new spatial conjugations. Poetic images, which have not been yet re-lived, invite the viewer to act, to ponder, to dream beyond the boundaries of the common. Each newly-set image is associated with an archetype existing in one’s individual consciousness. The spatial conditions defined by the artists in the show influence consciousness itself and the subjective - poetic interpretation of the space, the environment, the metropolis itself and its conditions. The works create spaces of "translation" on the conditions of viewing, on our relationship with them and the flow starting from the base, the ground, the root. Ground defines the paths and the new directions of the body and the experience of the viewer. The visualization of the works creates shifts in space through a personal psycho-geography redefining thus our relationship with materiality and the earth’s points . Participating artists: Stefania Amplianiti, Nikolaos Bampatsias, Christie Bucaj, Elpida Frageskidou, Kleitia Kokalari, Νikolaos Komiotis,, Eirini Anastasia Ntioudi, Chloé Paré. 17 December, 2019 to 12 January, 2020 Info: Exhibition Opening: Tuesday 17 December, 20.00 Hours: Monday - Sunday 12.00-20.00 (Closed 25,26/12/2019 & 1,6/1/2020) Tags: 17/12/2019 to 12/01/2020 |
