On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Greek Diva’s death, the Greek National Opera honours Maria Callas with a unique Opera Gala this 14th of September at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. Excerpts from operas marked by her divine performances will be performed by three great sopranos of the Hellenic National Opera, with an international career, Tseia Kostea, Myrto Papathanasiou, Christina Poulitsi. The Orchestra of the National Opera will be led by Elias Voudouris.
The evening, on the eve of International Day of Democracy, will begin with the presentation of the Democracy Award of the City of Athens to Felipe González Marques by the Mayor of Athens, George Kaminis.
The award, an integral part of the Athens Democracy Forum, was established last year as a distinction among individuals or organizations with international prestige and recognition, whose work & ethics defend democracy and human rights.
Felipe Gonzalez, the longest-running Prime Minister in Spain's history, stamped his attitude and work to consolidate democracy in the era after Franco's dictatorship in Spain. At the same time, he worked with dedication and inspiration for the ideals of the European project.
