This programme provides a complete tour to the sacred site of ancient Olympia in the 2nd century BC. Monuments and sacred buildings come to life, enabling visitors to participate in the events and the rituals of the Olympic Games and to learn about the history of the city: the temple of Zeus, a model of Doric peripteral temple with magnificent sculpted decoration, the Heraion, the oldest monumental building of the sanctuary, dedicated to the goddess Hera, the Gymnasium, which was used for the training of javelin throwers, discus throwers and runners, the Palaestra, where the wrestlers, jumpers and boxers trained, the Leonidaion, which was where the official guests stayed, the Bouleuterion, where athletes, relatives and judges took a vow that they would upheld the rules of the Games, the Stadium, where most of the events took place, the Treasuries of various cities, where valuable offerings were kept, the Philippeion, which was dedicated by Philip II, king of Macedonia, after his victory in the battle of Chaeronea in 338 BC.

The city of Miletus on the western coast of Asia Minor, one of the most important cities in Ionia, comes to life again in the Virtual Reality production
“A Walk Through Ancient Miletus”. This production, in the special environment of immersion of “Tholos”, uses some new technical characteristics, which allow the development of multiple directions of digital life in the virtual space and not a predetermined course.

Starting again in September, guided tours are offered in Greek & English for groups.
At the Virtual Reality programme there is a tour at the meninsula and the city of Miletus, as it was 2,000 years ago. Visitors can explore the virtual city and learn about the most important public buildings. Starting from the gate at the Port of the Lions, they enter the sanctuary of Apollo Delphinios. Then, they visit the Ionian Stoa, which housed the stores of the city, the Hellenistic Gymnasium, the North Agora and the Bouleuterion, being able to see even the details of the buildings' architecture. They can “fly” over the city for one last panoramic view of the perfect city planning design, or even “dive” into its port.

Dinosaurs at Dusk is a 44-min show produced by Mirage3D for digital dome theatres. It is presented at "THOLOS", the Virtual Reality Theater of Hellenic Cosmos.
A learning adventure of a father and his teenage daughter Lucy, who share a fascination for all things that fly.
You’ll travel back in time to meet the pterosaurs and the ancestors of modern-day birds: the feathered dinosaurs. Lucy and her father navigate from continent to continent, looking for clues about the origins of flight.
When time runs out they experience first-hand the cataclysmic “last day” of the dinosaurs.
Science content includes topics such as continental drift, proper motion of stars, asteroids and impacts, extinctions and the convergent development of flight among species.

The Anthropocene (/ænˈθrɒp.əˌsiːn) was popularised as an environmental term at the dawn of the 21st century by Paul Crutzen, the Dutch Nobel laureate and pioneer on atmospheric chemistry; it constitutes a proposed geological epoch that starts with the beginning of the first important human impact on Earth's geology and ecosystems, including climate change caused by human activity.

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organisation officially declared the outbreak of a new virus, under the name covid-19, a pandemic. The invisible threat has taken its toll on human life and safety, as well as global economy and collective action, forcing isolation or restricted access to public areas as precautionary measures. Vacant, desolate streets and cities in the midst of social distress, financial uncertainty and climate crisis, echo the urban void and the urgency to remain vigilant and socially alert.

During the unsettling times of a global pandemic and national lockdowns, which seem to have emerged out of dystopic fiction, what does it mean for earth and the anthropocene to remain on hold? Which are the challenges and the environmental concerns that are raised for an artist? How can social distancing and quarantine reshape artistic practices and environmental narratives? In which ways can covid-19 impact environmental crisis and our general perception of the issue?

In response to this unprecedented and urgent situation and its toll on the planet’s well-being and safety, PCAI, on the occasion of the Anthropocene On Hold exhibition, has invited 20 international visual artists to address the gravity of a global pandemic and its impact on art engagement and production as well as earth’s resilience and sustainability. James Bridle, Ionian Bisai & Sotiris Tsiganos, Matthias Fritsch, Kyriaki Goni, Markus Hanakam & Roswitha Schuller, Hypercomf, Rindon Johnson, Evi Kalogiropoulou, Lito Kattou, Bianca Kennedy and the Swan Collective, Marcin Liminowicz & Trang Ha, Charly Nijensohn, Kosmas Nikolaou, Ira Schneider, Andrew Norman Wilson participate with new works in PCAI’s first online group exhibition curated by Kika Kyriakakou; an ongoing digital project that will be hosted on PCAI’s YouTube Channel (youtube.com/channel/UCKThYXergdup6X4g6ndTC2w) from May 14 to December 31, 2020.

Polyeco Contemporary Art Initiative (PCAI), was founded in 2014 by Athanasios Polychronopoulos, Polyeco Group Executive Chairman, as a means to increase environmental awareness through contemporary art and video. The organisation implements its objectives though three areas of activity: its mainly commissioned-based Art Collection, its Projects and its Support. Since 2018 PCAI has been a member of the International Association of Corporate Collections of Contemporary Art IACCCA and it has been awarded for its art projects, educational programs and partnerships on many occasions. Kika Kyriakakou, PCAI’s Artistic Director, initiated in 2019 through an open call the organisation’s artist-in-residence programme focusing on the interaction between contemporary art and environmental consciousness. The selection committee, consisting of Hans Ulrich Obrist, Serpentine Galleries Artistic Director, Krist Gruijthuijsen, KW Institute for Contemporary Art Director, and the PCAI Directors, chose artists Rindon Johnson and Lito Kattou to participate in the residency programme taking place in 2020.

Rafael’s fresco “The School of Athens” is an ambition; a utopian vision of a free, open, informal, and common space for learning. It is an in-between space. Neither inside nor outside, not quite a room, but also not simply a space for circulation. It is not a classroom, and yet we see scholars and students debating, teaching, and studying.

Although we typically think of learning taking place in the classroom, educators and architects have recognized for thousands of years that learning also takes place in the space between; in the hallways, on the stairs, at the café, in the quad – the spaces we call the academic commons. Socrates taught in the Agora. Plato founded his Academy in the olive grove outside of Athens and often taught while walking. Medieval colleges were organized around a communal courtyard and 20th century universities are filled with generous circulation corridors that double as informal learning spaces.

The School of Athens exhibition showcases physical models of seventy different academic common spaces from across history and around the world, both realized and unrealized. All models are printed at the same scale - 1:200 - and show only the portion of the university that we have identified as the academic commons, excluding all of the other closed spaces like classrooms and offices. By no means canonical or complete, this work is an ongoing and evolving research project – an ever expanding spatial atlas of the architecture of the academic commons.

Curated by NEIHEISER ARGYROS, The School of Athens at the Benaki Museum continues and expands the research exhibited at the Greek National Pavilion at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale and forms a collaboration between students of the National Technical University in Athens (NTUA) and the Architectural Association (AA) in London.

In early September, The B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation inaugurates its new visual arts period with the retrospective exhibition of the renowned creator Costas Tsoclis, in view of the artist’s 90th birthday.

“Costas Tsoclis”, writes the exhibition’s curator, Takis Mavrotas, “is amongst the leading conceptual artists, and his profound insight leads him, approximately since 1955 until today, to the transformation of the real into the imaginary and of the invisible into the visible, for he relentlessly attempts to master a personal expression of plasticity imbued by poetical tension and philosophical power. Bold and brave, he struggles with the principles and the limits of painting in order to complete his multifaceted oeuvre that reflects his perceptive spirit. His work is characterised by constant evolution, high technical precision and semiotic density, probably because the simulacrum of its significance renders his work unique through the dissimilarity of its morphoplastic hypostasis; unique with regard to art, unique in terms of the emotions it triggers to the spectator. Hence, Tsoclis earned his place amongst the pioneers of contemporary art, with an immense set of semantic tension through paintings, installations, structures, performances, assemblages and video projections that corroborate his words: ‘Art is not meant to render the human being unhappier, but to redeem him.’”

We often say that life “unravels” before our eyes. That memory is a “thread” with the potential to direct its course. That joy and peace must first “take root” in order to survive.

The photographs, videos, installations and objects of Katsifaraki, exhibited discreetly around the old textile factory, stand to confirm the metaphorical power of the thread and its relationship to nature. Through this cohabitation of images, threads, landscapes and machinery, nomadic/rhizomatic thought lays claim to our attention once again.

66 works by 34 artists from the Harry David Art Collection, are presented in five rooms within the EMST Temporary Exhibitions Space (Ground Floor), from 22 September 2020 to 18 March 2021.

Works by representative artists of the contemporary African art, selected from the Harry David Art Collection, are presented in the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (EMST), in five specially designed rooms, created by the Kallos Turin architectural practice (architects Stephania Kallos and Abby Turin). Five curators, Osei Bonsu (Curator at Tate Modern), Rashid Johnson (Visual Artist), Elvira Dyangani Ose (Director of The Showroom art space), Emily Tsingou (Art Advisor to the Harry David Art Collection), Burkhard Varnholt (Collector, Founder of KINDL Centre for Contemporary Art) each take on a ‘room’, creating different discourses and approaches.

The South African term UBUNTU can be translated as ‘humanness’, ‘humanity towards others’, as a sense of human nature and a spirit of shared humanity. As a starting point for this exhibition, the phrase highlights the notion of a community and a spirit of sharing. At a time when the issue of race and racial discrimination remains as topical as ever - and the art of the developing countries of Africa and its diaspora is increasingly finding international recognition in the multi-cultural context of contemporary art - the exhibition aims to present the public with an overview of contemporary African art and the art of the African diaspora.

The political, historical and cultural polyphony that characterizes post-colonial Africa and expresses the constantly shifting conditions of the African continent lies at the core of the works in the exhibition, and is explored through a variety of themes, concepts and ideas, touching upon slavery and its history, racism and exploitation, segregation and apartheid, war, civil war, famine, cultural imperialism, race and gender, the ecological exploitation of Africa, African rites and rituals, African crafts traditions, representations of the black body, the notion of diaspora and displacement, the socio-political construction of skin colour, the experience of the immigrant, African history and memory, personal narratives and portraiture.

The Harry David Art Collection

The Harry David Art Collection is a post-conceptual collection of contemporary art. Established 20 years ago, it is an extended yet focused collection of a substantial number of works by leading artists active in Africa and the diaspora as well as African American artists.

The ethos of the collection is underpinned by a wish to represent the multiplicity of voices and disciplines that define the cultural, political and historical foundations of post-colonial Africa, and reflect the changing continent today. Some of the  profound concerns that can be seen in the works of the collection include an engagement with: the history of slavery; racist exploitation; racial segregation and apartheid; war; civil war; famine; cultural imperialism; race and gender; the ecological exploitation of Africa; a focus on African rituals and rites traditions; African crafts traditions; the black body and its representation; the diaspora and displacement; the socio-political construct of skin colour; the experience of the immigrant; African history and memory; personal narratives and portraiture.

Artists represented in the collection vary from established and internationally recognized, to young and upcoming practitioners. Artists include Wangechi Mutu, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Ibrahim Mahama, William Kentridge, Abdoulaye Konaté, Romuald Hazoume, Meschac Gaba, Kendell Geers are collected alongside Michael Armitage, Lisa Brice, Lebohang Kganye, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye to name a few. The Harry David collection has also amassed a number of African American artists including Rashid Johnson, Ellen Gallagher, Mickalene Thomas, Sanford Biggers, Theaster Gates, Toyin Ojih Odutola.
