Anthropocene On HoldVisual Arts ANTHROPOCENE ON HOLD: PCAI’s online group exhibition opens on May 14, 2020 20 international visual artists address the impact of a global pandemic on art ecosystems and earth’s resilience and sustainability James Bridle, Ionian Bisai & Sotiris Tsiganos, Matthias Fritsch, Kyriaki Goni, Markus Hanakam & Roswitha Schuller, Hypercomf, Rindon Johnson, Evi Kalogiropoulou, Lito Kattou, Bianca Kennedy and the Swan Collective, Marcin Liminowicz & Trang Ha, Charly Nijensohn, Kosmas Nikolaou, Ira Schneider, Andrew Norman Wilson 14 May, 2020 to 31 December, 2020 Info: The Anthropocene (/ænˈθrɒp.əˌsiːn) was popularised as an environmental term at the dawn of the 21st century by Paul Crutzen, the Dutch Nobel laureate and pioneer on atmospheric chemistry; it constitutes a proposed geological epoch that starts with the beginning of the first important human impact on Earth's geology and ecosystems, including climate change caused by human activity. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organisation officially declared the outbreak of a new virus, under the name covid-19, a pandemic. The invisible threat has taken its toll on human life and safety, as well as global economy and collective action, forcing isolation or restricted access to public areas as precautionary measures. Vacant, desolate streets and cities in the midst of social distress, financial uncertainty and climate crisis, echo the urban void and the urgency to remain vigilant and socially alert. During the unsettling times of a global pandemic and national lockdowns, which seem to have emerged out of dystopic fiction, what does it mean for earth and the anthropocene to remain on hold? Which are the challenges and the environmental concerns that are raised for an artist? How can social distancing and quarantine reshape artistic practices and environmental narratives? In which ways can covid-19 impact environmental crisis and our general perception of the issue? In response to this unprecedented and urgent situation and its toll on the planet’s well-being and safety, PCAI, on the occasion of the Anthropocene On Hold exhibition, has invited 20 international visual artists to address the gravity of a global pandemic and its impact on art engagement and production as well as earth’s resilience and sustainability. James Bridle, Ionian Bisai & Sotiris Tsiganos, Matthias Fritsch, Kyriaki Goni, Markus Hanakam & Roswitha Schuller, Hypercomf, Rindon Johnson, Evi Kalogiropoulou, Lito Kattou, Bianca Kennedy and the Swan Collective, Marcin Liminowicz & Trang Ha, Charly Nijensohn, Kosmas Nikolaou, Ira Schneider, Andrew Norman Wilson participate with new works in PCAI’s first online group exhibition curated by Kika Kyriakakou; an ongoing digital project that will be hosted on PCAI’s YouTube Channel (youtube.com/channel/UCKThYXergdup6X4g6ndTC2w) from May 14 to December 31, 2020. MORE ABOUT PCAI Polyeco Contemporary Art Initiative (PCAI), was founded in 2014 by Athanasios Polychronopoulos, Polyeco Group Executive Chairman, as a means to increase environmental awareness through contemporary art and video. The organisation implements its objectives though three areas of activity: its mainly commissioned-based Art Collection, its Projects and its Support. Since 2018 PCAI has been a member of the International Association of Corporate Collections of Contemporary Art IACCCA and it has been awarded for its art projects, educational programs and partnerships on many occasions. Kika Kyriakakou, PCAI’s Artistic Director, initiated in 2019 through an open call the organisation’s artist-in-residence programme focusing on the interaction between contemporary art and environmental consciousness. The selection committee, consisting of Hans Ulrich Obrist, Serpentine Galleries Artistic Director, Krist Gruijthuijsen, KW Institute for Contemporary Art Director, and the PCAI Directors, chose artists Rindon Johnson and Lito Kattou to participate in the residency programme taking place in 2020. Hours: 00:00-23:59 Tags: 14/05/2020 to 31/12/2020 Costas Tsoclis: Painting. Limits and Transgressions
Costas Tsoclis: Painting. Limits and TransgressionsExhibition In early September, The B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation inaugurates its new visual arts period with the retrospective exhibition of the renowned creator Costas Tsoclis, in view of the artist’s 90th birthday. “Costas Tsoclis”, writes the exhibition’s curator, Takis Mavrotas, “is amongst the leading conceptual artists, and his profound insight leads him, approximately since 1955 until today, to the transformation of the real into the imaginary and of the invisible into the visible, for he relentlessly attempts to master a personal expression of plasticity imbued by poetical tension and philosophical power. Bold and brave, he struggles with the principles and the limits of painting in order to complete his multifaceted oeuvre that reflects his perceptive spirit. His work is characterised by constant evolution, high technical precision and semiotic density, probably because the simulacrum of its significance renders his work unique through the dissimilarity of its morphoplastic hypostasis; unique with regard to art, unique in terms of the emotions it triggers to the spectator. Hence, Tsoclis earned his place amongst the pioneers of contemporary art, with an immense set of semantic tension through paintings, installations, structures, performances, assemblages and video projections that corroborate his words: ‘Art is not meant to render the human being unhappier, but to redeem him.’” 8 September, 2020 to 8 November, 2020 Info: EXHIBITION CURATOR – CATALOGUE EDITOR Hours: 10:00 - 18:00 08/09/2020 to 08/11/2020 Katerina Katsifaraki "Dwelling"
Katerina Katsifaraki "Dwelling"Έκθεση Katerina Katsifaraki’s art revolves around the concept of perpetual motion. Ephemeral dwelling, roots and uprooting, the ceaseless moving from place to place, taking notice of the ostensibly unimportant and giving prominence to the fleeting are at the epicentre of her work. 22 September, 2020 to 9 January, 2021 Info: We often say that life “unravels” before our eyes. That memory is a “thread” with the potential to direct its course. That joy and peace must first “take root” in order to survive. The photographs, videos, installations and objects of Katsifaraki, exhibited discreetly around the old textile factory, stand to confirm the metaphorical power of the thread and its relationship to nature. Through this cohabitation of images, threads, landscapes and machinery, nomadic/rhizomatic thought lays claim to our attention once again. Duration: 22/09/2020-09/01/2020 Hours: Tuesday/ Wednesday/ Thursday/ Friday/ Saturday: 10:00 - 15:00 Tickets: Admission free Special remarks: Parking Wheelchair accessible Tags: 22/09/2020 to 09/01/2021 UBUNTU Five rooms from the Harry David Art Collection
UBUNTU Five rooms from the Harry David Art CollectionExhibition UBUNTU 66 works by 34 artists from the Harry David Art Collection, are presented in five rooms within the EMST Temporary Exhibitions Space (Ground Floor), from 22 September 2020 to 18 March 2021. Works by representative artists of the contemporary African art, selected from the Harry David Art Collection, are presented in the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (EMST), in five specially designed rooms, created by the Kallos Turin architectural practice (architects Stephania Kallos and Abby Turin). Five curators, Osei Bonsu (Curator at Tate Modern), Rashid Johnson (Visual Artist), Elvira Dyangani Ose (Director of The Showroom art space), Emily Tsingou (Art Advisor to the Harry David Art Collection), Burkhard Varnholt (Collector, Founder of KINDL Centre for Contemporary Art) each take on a ‘room’, creating different discourses and approaches. The South African term UBUNTU can be translated as ‘humanness’, ‘humanity towards others’, as a sense of human nature and a spirit of shared humanity. As a starting point for this exhibition, the phrase highlights the notion of a community and a spirit of sharing. At a time when the issue of race and racial discrimination remains as topical as ever - and the art of the developing countries of Africa and its diaspora is increasingly finding international recognition in the multi-cultural context of contemporary art - the exhibition aims to present the public with an overview of contemporary African art and the art of the African diaspora. The political, historical and cultural polyphony that characterizes post-colonial Africa and expresses the constantly shifting conditions of the African continent lies at the core of the works in the exhibition, and is explored through a variety of themes, concepts and ideas, touching upon slavery and its history, racism and exploitation, segregation and apartheid, war, civil war, famine, cultural imperialism, race and gender, the ecological exploitation of Africa, African rites and rituals, African crafts traditions, representations of the black body, the notion of diaspora and displacement, the socio-political construction of skin colour, the experience of the immigrant, African history and memory, personal narratives and portraiture. 22 September, 2020 to 18 March, 2021 Info: Participating artists Ifeoma Anyaeji, Lyle Ashton Harris, Κader Attia, Sanford Biggers, Virginia Chihota, Godfried Donkor, Ibrahim El-Salahi, Andrew Esiebo, Mary Evans, Ellen Gallagher, Theaster Gates, Lauren Halsey, Romuald Hazoumè, Lubaina Himid, Kudzanai-Violet Hwami, Taiye Idahor, Rashid Johnson, Moshekwa Langa, Kemang Wa Lehulere, Senzeni Marasela, Mohau Modisakeng, Meleko Mokgosi, Zanele Muholi, Wangechi Mutu, Kori Newkirk, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Chris Ofili, Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum, Tschabalala Self, Yinka Shonibare, Shinique Smith, Hank Willis Thomas, Kara Walker, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye The Harry David Art Collection The Harry David Art Collection is a post-conceptual collection of contemporary art. Pernille Koldbech Fich: Preparing for the BeachExhibition Preparing for the Beach is a photographic peek into a world inhabited by 25 female pensioners who each attend a different Day Care Centre for Senior Citizens (ΚΑΠΗ) or Friendship Clubs. These clubs are scattered across the city and offer senior citizen gymnastics and self-defence classes taught by retired male top athletes. 1 October, 2020 to 22 November, 2020 Info: Preparing for the Beach merges memories, fiction and documentary into a Memento Mori about life's volatility; about time going by, while physical actions repeat themselves with the desire to maintain a healthy body and vibrant memories in order to keep on going. The 67 photographic images are accompanied by short quotes and audio recordings from the daily scenes at the Centres. In them, the women are in a dialogue with the instructors and the artist’s young interpreter. Together, they reflect on the past and present within a one-year cycle. The photographs are strangely subtle and yet insisting. They yield narratives that are both true and imaginary. Throughout the encounters with the women depicted, one is forced to reflect on one’s own life and mortality: In Preparing for the Beach the seemingly simple things and matter-of-fact events plunge into unknown depths. Equally, the complexities of knowing and understanding age and lived life become strangely familiar. The meeting with Pernille Koldbech Fichs’ new works leaves the viewer a little puzzled, yet much wiser on what it means to be human. Theorimata 2: On HistoryInfo: Theorimata, the exhibition / institution by AICA Hellas, the Greek Section of the International Association of Art Critics, AICA International, is presented for the second time at the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (EMST), from October 1 until November 1, 2020 in the EMST Temporary Exhibitions Space (-1). The first exhibition was presented in 2018 with the aim to become a biennial event, providing the chance to curators, critics, art history scholars, and also artists to converse, collaborate and intervene in the artistic field; the theme of “Theorimata” will be differentiated each time, focusing on the characteristics and major issues of each period. For the exhibition Theorimata 2: On History, 25 curators, scholars and art critics, members of the Greek Section of AICA, propose 56 artists who, with History as their axis, promote the function of art as an alternative educational tool and a means of dynamically intervening in the social fabric. The idea that the knowledge of the past is an aid to the interpretation of the present and a guide to the future, asserted by Thucydides in his first book on the History of the Peloponnesian War, runs through the exhibition in which installations, constructions, sculptures, photographs, paintings, artists’ books, drawings, videos and happenings are presented. The exhibition will be accompanied by a bilingual catalogue (in Greek and English) with introductory texts by Bia Papadopoulou and Emmanuel Mavrommatis, texts by the curators, photographs of the works and biographies of both the curators and artists. Takis Theodoropoulos | From Cavafy to HomerLecture From Cavafy to Homer, on the opposite shore of time, the famous abomination of Odysseus, "hold my heart", gives the mark of human existence. A sob, declaring the value of life. The modern world, with the illusion of its omnipotence, struggles to erase its memory, to transform it into the one-dimensional apathy of homo economicus. But Homer is engraved on the waxy surface of the soul. As Dostoevsky says: "Every soul seeks to rest on the Homeric shore nestled within it." A not at all literary walk in texts that still keep us alive, that set the boundaries of a world that believes that with vitamins and Botox it will conquer immortality. 6 October, 2020 to 10 November, 2020 Info: October 6,13,20,27, November 3,10 Tuesday, 19:00 – 21:00 6 Lectures: 60€, 30€, Individual Lecture: 12€, 8€ Online Attendance 6 Lectures: 50€, Individual Lecture: 10€ Book your ticket here Venue: B&M Theocharakis Foundation & Online Lectures Language: Greek Hours: Tuesday, 19:00 – 21:00 06/10/2020 to 10/11/2020 Stelios Ramfos | From Homer to Alexander

Vasilis Gerontakos | Andrei Tarkovsky: The Ark of ImagesLecture “My job is to make the viewer of my films his need to love and be loved, to understand that beauty calls him near her” to her." This phrase of Andrei Tarkovsky encloses the effort of a creator to awaken man, so that he becomes a participant in a universe, where the driving force is love. Andrei Tarkovsky is an undercover poet-director, the creator of a complex cosmopolitanism whose roots are traced to late 19th-century Russia, guided on one hand by Dostoevsky's genius, Dovzhenko's lyricism, the power of great creators of the time, and on the other, by the spirituality of Orthodoxy and other metaphysical Eastern dogmas. Based on these influences, he composed a universe of magical relationships, where he directed with a new cinematic language, the meeting of man with the world. Image is the key to entering this universe, which will be explored through his work. This tribute consists of three meetings. In the first meeting, a presentation will be made, showing some excerpts from the film Nostalgia, as well as necessary material, exploring the way Tarkovsky detects nostalgia and the search for the "place" as an element of identity. In the second meeting, using the same methods and analysing the film “Andrei Rublyov”, we will explore Tarkovsky’s relationship with spirituality, tradition, orthodoxy, power, God and his anguished attempt to meet the "Other”. In the third meeting, through the film “Sacrifice”, his swan song, his gaze will be sought on modern civilization, the search for fundamental values that govern human existence, the meaning of sacrifice, the future of humanity. 23 October, 2020 to 6 November, 2020 Info: October 23, 30 2020, November 6 2020 Friday, 18:00 – 20:00 Individual Lecture: 10€, 5€ Book your ticket here Venue: B&M Theocharakis Foundation Language: Greek Hours: Friday, 18:00 – 20:00 23/10/2020 to 06/11/2020 |
